Micromanagement vs. Absentee Management: Striking the Balance for Effective Leadership

#managertraining #employeeengagement #employeeretention #micromanagement

Here's the truth: nobody wants to be micromanaged.

It's also true that humans crave being led, supported, equipped, resourced, and empowered in all ways by their people managers.

Sometimes, in my work, I come across similar situations with people managers.

Here's a typical example: a manager who hides behind the idea of micromanagement to excuse what is absentee management.

The difference between this command-and-control micromanagement approach is about taking ownership away from the employee.

There's a difference between that and absentee management, where the manager sends this message (whether directly to employees or not): "Hey, it's sink or swim out there. You figure it out, and don't bother me."

If you are a leader, remember that there's micromanagement, absentee management, and good people management that actually leads to the flourishing of those you lead.
