Why Most Employees Don’t Feel Heard and How Leaders Can Make Opinions Count

#employeeengagement #employeelistening #employeeretention #leadership

One week, I facilitated a workshop where I shared a statistic from the Gallup Organization:

"Only 3 out of 10 employees statistically believe that their opinion seemed to count at work."

After the workshop, an attendee approached me and asked a question.

He said, "I'm curious, what does it take for an employee to believe their opinion counts? Does it mean that they just have to feel listened to? Or do they mean, hey, you have to take specific action on the opinion I shared to make them feel like they're heard?"

It's an excellent question.

And here's what's so cool about this situation.

Employees know that every opinion or thought they share can't always be acted on.

What they really want is to understand how their thoughts, contributions, opinions, and ideas factor into leaders' decision-making models and processes.

That's how we can make sure that our employees believe their thoughts matter, and that's achievable.
