How to Know When Your Leadership Methods Need to Change
Here’s the thing about leadership… Sometimes what used to work just doesn’t anymore. You might feel stuck or like you’re facing a challenge you can’t quite name.
In those moments, there’s a powerful question worth asking: Are the methods I’m using still getting me (and my team) the outcomes we actually want? ๐ค
It’s a deceptively simple question. But the leaders who are willing to ask it—and sit with the answer—are the ones who unlock real growth. ๐
We All Fall Into Patterns (You’re Not Alone)
When you’ve been leading for a while, it’s natural to develop go-to strategies. You lean on what’s worked before. You build rhythms, habits, preferences. Without even realizing it, you can end up leading on autopilot. ๐ฉโ๏ธ
The only problem? Your team, your culture and your goals may have changed. And if your methods haven’t evolved with them, frustration can creep in (on all sides).
This doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It just means it might be time to pause and zoom out.
Take the 30,000-Foot View
One of the most helpful things a leader can do is step back and take inventory—not just of what’s happening, but of how you’re approaching it.
โ How am I communicating with my team right now?
โ What leadership habits have I fallen into—and are they still helpful?
โ Are my one-on-ones meaningful, or just routine?
โ Am I showing up the way I want to be experienced?
โ Are we solving the same problems over and over?
Sometimes, these questions spark clarity. Sometimes, they surface discomfort. Both are useful in helping you determine the root of what’s going on and if a shift needs to happen.
Not Sure Where to Start?
You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. Often, the most powerful shifts start with simply listening better. ๐
Instead of guessing what your team needs, ask them. Instead of assuming engagement, explore it together.
